The process of pregnancy and labour places large demands on the body. Many women experience happy, stress free pregnancies and straightforward labours, however this is not always the case. With many women now working full time through their pregnancies, having to cope with other small children, and the size of full term infants increasing, the last trimester of the pregnancy can become as uncomfortable as the first and exhausting for the expectant mother.

Cranial Osteopathic treatment is a safe and effective way of helping the body cope with the additional physical, hormonal and emotional demands of pregnancy and labour.

The majority of women experience morning sickness during the first trimester this is often accompanied with excessive tiredness and feeling emotionally labile. The body is dealing with massive hormonal fluctuations during the first few months as the embryo develops. Treatment can help balance the hormonal system and reduce the severity of nausea, vomiting, mood swings and exhaustion.

As the baby grows it increases physical demands on the body, with the uterus taking up ever more space in the abdominal cavity leaving less space for the abdominal organs often resulting in feelings of breathlessness and heart burn. The additional weight of the baby and its position may cause low backache, leg and pelvic discomfort. Pre existing postural strains of the musculo-skeletal system particularly in the pelvis often contribute to the baby settling in the wrong position leading to a long and difficult labour. Strains on the musculo-skeletal system can be greatly reduced with treatment giving the baby space to turn to the head down facing backwards position, which is optimal for delivery. Ensuring that the pelvic bones can open equally decreases the chance of the baby getting stuck as it traverses the birth canal. A reduction in postural strain decreases tension in the pelvic floor and diaphragm, which is often beneficial for sufferers of excessive heartburn, haemorrhoids and varicose veins.

A postnatal check up ensures that any strain to the pelvis and body during the birth process can be balanced out and the pelvic bones can reset to a normal position.

Epidurals can irritate the membranous sack (Dura) surrounding the brain and spinal cord and this is a very common cause of headaches. Treatment is benefici.al to reduce irritability and tension in this membranous system, which means a better return to normal posture.

Ideally a full Osteopathic assessment before pregnancy would be very useful, as the biomechanics of the body could be in as optimal position as possible for the coming pregnancy.

Every pregnancy is ‘special’. Osteopaths focus on the mother as an individual and take account of her emotions as well as her physical condition. Many women like to continue to exercise with pregnancy and advice can be given on what is useful at each stage of pregnancy and tailored to each individual’s level of fitness.
